Malihe Norouzi is a photographer and video art maker who challenges the boundaries of sexual taboos and censorship in her work. She explores the complex issues of feminism, identity, gender, sexuality, power, race and nudity. Malihe draws inspiration from her own personal experiences as a woman living in Iran, where she faces many restrictions and oppressions due to her gender and sexuality. She uses symbolic, fetishistic elements and animals in metaphoric atmospheres to make a contrast between reality and fantasy. She layers the juxtaposition of these elements to create a sense of ambiguity, contradiction, a dualistic structure, and disjointed narratives in her artwork. She also uses different media, such as photography, video, collage and installation, to create a multidimensional and immersive experience for her viewers.
Malihe’s works have been widely exhibited at several galleries and festivals around the world. She has been nominated and given awards and grants from prestigious organizations, such as Redbull Music Academy, Aesthetic Short Film Festival, and Hysteria Magazine. Her work presented at the Istanbul Contemporary Art Fair in Turkey and also one of her photographs was successfully bid on by an Art Auction in The Lethaby Gallery in London with several well-known English artists. She has also collaborated with some esteemed artists and activists to raise awareness and support for various causes, such as women’s rights, LGBTQ+rights, and environmental issues.
Malihe graduated in 2015 with a Master of Fine Art from Central Saint Martin, University of Arts London. She is currently pursuing her PhD level at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She is working on the thesis to explore the context of feminism and censorship by analyzing and critiquing feminism in art and its origins, investigating the impact of feminism on Iranian art from the 19th century to the present, and examining how Iranian women have addressed these issues in the art society during this period. Malihe is also working on a new art project to capture the stories and experiences of a transgender couple who have faced discrimination, rejection, or isolation due to their gender identity or expression.
